For these solfege puzzles, you will use active listening and pitch dictation skills to identify the appropriate solfege syllables of each puzzle and write the syllables underneath the dots.

MU:Pr6.1.T.Ia – Using digital tools, demonstrate attention to technical accuracy and expressive qualities in prepared and improvised performances of a varied repertoire of music.

MU:Pr4.2.Ka – With guidance, explore and demonstrate awareness of music contrasts (such as high/low, loud/soft, same/different) in a variety of music selected for performance.

Have you ever put a jigsaw puzzle together? You open the box and find so many pieces! You look carefully at the edges of each puzzle to see if they fit together correctly. Then, when you match all of the pieces together in their correct places, you end up assembling a big picture.

This solfege puzzle activity is just like solving a jigsaw puzzle, except the puzzle you’re solving relies on your listening skills to put together the bigger picture: a melody!

Required Materials

  1. The Specdrums Edu app downloaded onto an iOS device
  2. At least one Specdrums Ring – Note: in a classroom, your students can work in groups or can take turns playing these individually
  3. Solfege Puzzle Printouts and Writing Utensils

First Activities: Download Color Guide to be used with Guess The Syllables (in pitch order) and Guess The Syllables (Mixed Up)

Use that same Color Guide to complete Puzzles #1-4

The remaining Puzzles #5-8 and Mixed Up Color Guide assign new colors to the Solfege syllables. The QR code will populate the app with a C Major scale, but the colors will be mixed up. See these video tutorials to learn how to assign your own colors to the syllables and notes.

  1. Connect rings to the Specdrums Edu App
  2. For each device, “Create Project” in Specdrums Edu App – choose your instrument and name your project

Once you’ve created your project, hit the scale button at the bottom of the screen to choose your scale. Watch this tutorial on setting scales in the Specdrums Edu app.

3. Play the dots on each puzzle left to right, top to bottom – pausing every time you see the double diagonal lines (for Puzzles #1- #8). You can start with the “Guess The Syllables” which are 5-note puzzles and then move on to the remaining 8-note, full-scale puzzles.

4. Use critical listening skills to identify the correct solfege syllables and write syllable names on lines under dots. Use the Color Guides in the activity to double check your answers.

5. For puzzles 5-8, scan QR code found here: Puzzles #5-8 and Mixed Up Color Guide

5. OPTIONAL: If you want to add some competition to your classroom, divide students into groups and see which group finishes a puzzle the quickest!

Now it’s YOUR turn to make your own solfege puzzle for your friends. Print out this sheet Challenge Dots. Cut out and arrange the dots the way you want. As your friends play through your new creation, make sure they correctly guess which solfege syllables go with the dots you assembled.
